LANGUAGE ARTS

After mastering the fundamentals of the Literacy Map program, students continue to participate in daily spelling, reading comprehension, writing, grammar, and oral presentation. Through the use of weekly spelling words, students increase their vocabulary, and consequently, their reading comprehension ability. Weekly on Fridays, students demonstrate their level of mastery in spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension. Paragraph assignments allow students to demonstrate their understanding of grammar and the writing process. Monthly oral recitations allow students to increase their self-confidence in public speaking and broaden their minds through recitation. Throughout all of their work, proper penmanship including letter formation and attention to detail is expected and assessed.

Through the use of whole group instruction students increase their awareness language, and consequently, increasing their confidence and independence with reading comprehension and written communication. Monthly oral recitations allow students to increase their self-confidence in public speaking and broaden their minds through recitation. Throughout all of their work, proper penmanship including letter formation and attention to detail is expected and assessed.

MATH

Building on the skills developed in the early years of the Saxon Math program, students in grades 4-6 continue to use the program and expand their knowledge and understanding through teacher-directed learning. Weekly basic fact quizzes and glossary tests ensure that an accurate understanding of terminology is thoroughly developed to allow proper understanding of the various mathematical concepts and to ensure mastery of all specific learner objectives.

SCIENCE

Through the give units outlined in the Alberta Program of Studies, students use the scientific method and reasoning to further their understanding of the world around them. Extensions of the regular curriculum can include delving deeper into the research of some of the most famous scientists.

Again, emphasis on acquiring an accurate scientific vocabulary is presented and used at each grade level.

SOCIAL

In addition to the curriculum in the Alberta Program of Studies students are engaged in weekly current events activities to broaden their knowledge and increase their perspective of status quo in world politics. Further extensions to the regular curriculum include detailed analysis of world geography, which is designed to increase their understanding and appreciation of current world events.
